Sir: The new president of Pakistan Muslim League — Nawaz (PML-N), whilst addressing the people of Karachi, declared that he will transform Karachi into Paris if the people gave him the mandate in the upcoming elections. When a journalist raised the issue of water shortage in the country, Mian Sahab replied that issue of water supply was his first priority and Rs 1 Billion have been earmarked for construction of Bhasha Dam. It is pertinent to point out that by mere allocating funds, dams cannot be constructed. Earlier, not only funds were allocated by President Musharraf but projects were also launched, even the land that was needed was acquired. But the project was shelved after his exit from power. Bhasha is located in a disputed area and our neighbour can create obstacles in the dam’s construction. If Shahbaz is serious about completing the project, he needs to assert his influence, and cooperate with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government and WAPDA authorities to construct the dam as early as possible.
