HYDERABAD: The Isra University Bachao Committee (IUBC) on Sunday accused the Kazi brothers of transforming the Isra University Welfare Hospital, a non-profit organisation owned by the Isra Islamic Foundation, into their ‘private enterprise’ by operating it as their personal company. While addressing a press conference, the office bearers of IUBC including the convener Ashraf Noonari, Shahid Ahmed Khoso, Dr Lala Qurban, Muhammad Ali Khushk, Wahid Bux Sangrasi, Sardar Ayaz Memon and Abdul Aziz Phul revealed that the institute established in 1986 with a charitable trust to run the hospital, has been charging patients more fee than ever before. Reportedly, the Kazi brothers have made their fortune while treating the poverty-stricken masses as Abdul Ghani Kazi occupies a position of administrator; Ghulam Qadir holds the office of vice-chancellor and their three sons, who have dominated the university staff. Meanwhile, they have founded Tibra College Al-Tibri Medical College and Hospital in Karachi, and Al Nafees Medical College in Islamabad, with an affiliation of Isra University Hospital. They also established an engineering college in Tando Adam Khan and Isra Higher Secondary School in Qasimabad, a town near Hyderabad city. Besides, they have constructed Isra Housing Scheme in Kandiaro, a city in the Naushahro Feroze District of Sindh province. The IUBC further alleged that with so many projects and institutes being run at the same time, the Kazi brothers have yielded a huge amount of money. “The management of Isra University Hospital has violated rules and regulations of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) by charging students an exorbitant amount of admission fee,” the IUBC said while giving an example that instead of Rs 675,000, a student was charged Rs 1.4 million. They further claimed that PMDC did not grant any quota seats of self-financing to the Isra University Hospital; however the management has given admission to the students on self-finance by charging them Rs 1.8 million. “The answer sheets, written by lead pencils, of position holders were manipulated to grant admission to students belonging to wealthy families on bribe,” the IUBC said while adding that nurses and other employees were being given scanty wages. Later, the IUBC appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Chairman of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Director of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate into malpractices and wrongdoings of Kazi brothers, and take a stern action against them according to the Constitution of Pakistan.
