Sir: It has been quite a few years now since Pakistan has been dealing with theload shedding crisis. The condition of power supply in our country is indeed, very poor. The supply breaks down frequently and at odd times. A resident of this country can be suddenly deprived of power at midnight or the afternoon. Sadly, we suffer this way despite having the capability to generate more power than we even need. Recently, it came to my knowledge that the total requirement of our country is 24,000 Megawatt in peak hours. The deficiency here amounts to 8000 Megawatts. This is what makes eight hours of load shedding mandatory in every Pakistani city. Of our total requirement of 24,000 megawatts, 30 to 35 percent is generated from hydropower.25 to 27 percent is madefrom burning gas and the remainder is made from nuclear power. But we have many resources which are not being utilized. Gilgit-Baltistan has the potential to create 200,000 Megawatts of power. Sadly, we have no dams for this purpose. Then there is Sindh’s ‘wind corridor’. This is a desert about 200 to 250kilometres from Karachi.Sindh has the potential to generate 50,000 Megawatts of wind power which is not being utilised. So if we only count Gilgit-Baltistan and Sindh, we have 250,000 Megawatts of green energy. Considering that we require only 24,000 Megawatts,we are all suffering 8 hours of loadshedding needlessly. This figure doesn’t even take into account Pakistan’s massive potential for solar energy. We can deliver ourselves from the electricity shortfall issue only if we utilize the resources we have been blessed with. ZAIN ALI KHAN Karachi Published in Daily Times, July 2nd 2018.
