Medical teachers should pay special attention on training young doctors to make them perfect professional physicians and surgeons. Punjab Minister for Health Dr Jawad Sajid Khan said this while addressing the faculty members of King Edward Medical University (KEMU) in the Senate Hall of KEMU on Tuesday. The Minister further said that relation of respect between a teacher and a student should be strengthened for which teachers should present themselves as role models for strengthening the sanctity and respect of the noble profession. KEMU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Masood Gondal and all members of the faculty along with Mayo Hospital Medical Superintendent were present in the meeting. Earlier, KEMU VC Professor Khalid Masood Gondal threw light on the historical prospects of the university. The vice chancellor informed that KEMU was established in 1911 and the college was given status of medical university in 2005. He informed that the new building of KEMU is under construction which would be completed in 2019 and would give a new look to the institution. He said that the new campus of KEMU is also being established in Muridke and it would be completed within a year. He also briefed the minister regarding the academic activities and further programmes regarding research work and new initiatives for the promotion of medical education under the umbrella of the university. Professor Gondal disclosed that the father of the present Health Minister Professor Ayub Ahmed Khan was a pioneer who established orthopedic surgery department in KEMU in 1948 and Health Minister Dr Jawad Sajid Khan also taught in the university for a period of two decades. On this occasion, Professor Saqib Shafi revealed that in olden times, young doctors were more interested in their professional training and remained busy with their seniors until the completion of operations list even in late hours. However, the trend has changed now and now trainee doctors have become very caring about their duty hours. Other teachers also spoke on the occasion and stressed the need to enhance financial benefits for medical teachers including better pay scales. On this occasion, the health minister said that principally, he has agreed that grade 21 is the right of the professors. Mayo Hospital Surgical Tower Project Director Professor Ibrar Ashraf also gave a presentation regarding the newly built surgical tower and the facilities being given in the tower.
