Sir: It seems as though former president Pervez Musharraf has vacated his position as chairman of the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML). This comes as a great shock to me because I was sure that Musharraf would stick around and keep trying to change things around him. Peshawar High Court’s 2013 verdict is the main cause behind this decision and I would like to understand how Khadija’s attacker managed to get away but someone like Musharraf is unable to find a way to contest elections. While the former president did try to fight the verdict in the Supreme Court, it seems that he is now not interested in staying on the battlefield anymore. His detractors will say that he could have chosen to return and face the music instead. While some may call him a coward, I believe that this country simply does not deserve Musharraf. It seems that Pakistan’s politics has taken an incredibly weird turn. I can’t understand what times we are living in. With Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) giving us a regular dose of disappointment and is fast turning into a big mess. Pakistan Muslim League — Noon (PML-N) is literally corruption on wheels. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) can only win votes through Bhutto or Benazir — literally dead people walking. I honestly thought that APML could make a difference if given the chance. However, things don’t look as great anymore. Why doesn’t this judiciary go after Imran Khan the same way it is going after Musharraf. Irrespective of his issues, Khan can do no wrong. And despite all his efforts, it seems that Musharraf can do no right. Since I was a child, I have heard people say that people don’t run Pakistan, God has to intervene to keep it standing. And with the current state of affairs, I feel that this statement — although mostly said in jest — might actually be true. KAINAT FATIMA Lahore Published in Daily Times, June 24th 2018.
