Sir: I welcome the move by the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan to unblock former president Musharraf’s identity card and passport. It was a very odd decision to block these things in the first place — we are the only country where a former army chief and president can so easily lose the identification that ties him to his country. As you know, the former president is being tried for treason. We have been criticising him for not being in Pakistan when in fact by blocking his documents all we did was ensure that there was no way for him to return. The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) has himself now asked that the NIC be unblocked so that Musharraf may return. The kind of treatment that we are meting out to a leader that in the past helped us move forward in many ways makes little sense. In addition to blocking his NIC and passport, the court had also ensured that the former president would not be able to sell more than 10 of his properties. This is a man that has made millions off of just his book — barring him from selling property was going to achieve what precisely? It almost seems as though deliberate efforts are being made to ensure that Musharraf cannot return to the country. If he does, he will be able to find his way back into the hearts of the people he served. Instead of focusing on the circus that our political parties throw our way every day, I would suggest that people seriously look towards Musharraf’s leadership to get Pakistan out of the hardship that plagues the country. I know there is great criticism against Musharraf’s policies, but the reality is that each leader comes with his own set of problems. Imran Khan unleashed Reham Khan upon us all, and Nawaz Sharif’s list of corrupt activities grows longer by the day. The circus that has befallen our politics was never a problem during Musharraf’s era. In the coming days, I am hoping to see that courts finally give Musharraf the space to serve this great country once more. The likes of Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan will not do anything but serve their own interest. What we need is a real leader and for that we can only look towards our former president MOHAMMAD IMRAN Lahore Published in Daily Times, June 12th 2018.
