LAHORE: The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar on Saturday took suo moto notice of Dr Tauqir Shah’s appointment as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Dr Tauqir Shah, who served as principal secretary to Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has been summoned to appear before the apex court, while the record concerning the appointment of Tauqir to the WTO has also been ordered. During the case hearing, the CJP questioned Punjab Health Minister Khwaja Salman Rafique over why Tauqir was sent abroad and that “why have the colours of your face faded after hearing about the suo moto notice?” To this end, Salman Rafique answered that Shah was appointed to Geneva, Switzerland, upon which the CJP further questioned that “isn’t this the same country where people accumulate their wealth?” Tauqir Shah was removed as principal secretary to CM after the Model Town tragedy, while in 2015, he was appointed as the Ambassador to the WTO.
