LOS ANGELES: The 90th academy awards were organized on Sunday in a ceremony hosted by Comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who also had the honor of hosting the Oscars last year, in Hollywood. A tale of romance, The Shape of Water, swept the award of best picture and the best director. Mexican film-maker Guillermo del Toro’s directorial was nominated for 13 categories and won four awards. Frances McDormand who played a grieving, furious mother in ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri’, received the best actress award. Gary Oldman, the British actor took the highest honour of best actor in Warner brother’s ‘Darkest hour’, a movie about Britain’s World War – II leader Winston Churchill. A Fantastic Woman, Chile’s groundbreaking story about a transgender woman, played by transgender actress Daniela Vega, won best foreign language film. The animated Mexican-inspired film Coco, who takes the audience to the world of spirits, was named best animated feature. Sam Rockwell, and Allison Janney took home their first Oscars for their supporting roles Three Billboards and independent ice-skating movie I, Tonya, respectively.
