OTTAWA/NEW DELHI: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Tredeau’s wardrobe of bright, glitzy traditional Indian attire has been ridiculed by locals in the country, with some accusing him and his family of playing annoying ‘fancy dress’ during their week-long visit. His wardrobe controversy began as the Trudeau family’s fancy traditional choice of clothing raised eyebrows, with the prime minister at one point sporting formal wear typically worn by bridegrooms. On social media, Indians have been taking to microblogging platforms, describing the Prime Minister’s attire as “fake and annoying.” This specifically comes after Mr. Trudeau attended a Bollywood gala on Tuesday where he met B-town bigwigs, including the revered actor Shah Rukh Khan, while donning a gold-embroidered Indian formalwear to greet him. This is in stark contrast to what the Bollywood star wore – a conservative suit – as did most other Indians in attendance. “FYI we Indians don’t dress like this every day sir, not even in Bollywood,” tweeted Indian politician Omar Abdullah. Is it just me or is this choreographed cuteness all just a bit much now? Also FYI we Indians don’t dress like this every day sir, not even in Bollywood. pic.twitter.com/xqAqfPnRoZ — Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) February 21, 2018 somehow there’s always at least one foreigner at Indian weddings taking pictures with all the guests pic.twitter.com/RHN3OI1N2x — José Covaco (@HoeZaay) February 21, 2018 I’m sure Justin Trudeau has now donned traditional Indian dress more times than I have. — Ankit R. Modi tweeted a welcome to Trudeau on Thursday evening, late on the day of a bilateral meeting between the two, adding: “I hope PM @JustinTrudeau and his family had a very enjoyable stay so far.”
