LAHORE: On the demise of Asma Jahangir, the Punjab Assembly on Friday passed a unanimous condolence resolution. The resolution was moved by Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan in the House with the consent of both the treasury and the opposition benches. It was later unanimously adopted. Paying tribute to Asma Jahangir’s services and struggle for supremacy of the constitution and rule of law and democracy, the resolution said that she was not only a brave and bold lawyer leader, but also an active social worker and human rights activist. The resolution stated that she had served as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association. The government of Pakistan had also awarded her with a civilian award of Hilal-e-Imtiaz for her lifetime struggle for the supremacy of constitution, rule of principles and superiority of democracy. The condolence resolution further stated that services of Asma Jahangir were noted with respect not only in Pakistan but also across the world. The House also offered prayers for her soul. A treasury member, Hina Pervez Butt, had earlier submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly Secretariat. She had demanded that the Punjab University’s Law Department be named after Asma Jahangir for her efforts for democracy and law. Hina was not present in the House when the joint resolution from her party and the opposition was moved on Friday so her demand was not added to it. When she was contacted, she said that she would try to move her resolution on a private member’s day as she had filed it in her personal capacity. Published in Daily Times, February 17th 2018.
