LAHORE: Addressing the media on Monday, Supreme Court (SC) former president Asma Jahangir responded to the criticism of judiciary by saying that it should not have to justify its verdicts. Asma, a human rights lawyer and social activist, said that although people criticise institutions all the time, the judiciary should not have to justify its actions before the people because democracy and the supremacy of law have to be parallel to each other. On December 16, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said that people need to stop doubting the integrity of the judiciary. Earlier today, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said that court verdicts that are against the Constitution of Pakistan have to be justified. Verdicts such as SC’s July 28 verdict create hurdles in Pakistan’s progress, she added.
