Sir: It seems that everyone in Pakistan has their hopes set on Gwadar. Everyone thinks that the Gwadar deep water port and CPEC will be able to save Pakistan from economic ruin. While that would be nice, it can’t happen until Gwadar is a city with basic amenities. One of these amenities is potable water, which Gwadar has none of. Instead, Gwadar must rely on water tankers which come to the city every day and leave behind small quantities of water which are exhausted in 24 hours. Until this issue is resolved, Pakistan cannot derive any benefit from the making of the deep water port at Gwadar. This is because nobody wants to invest in a city where there is no drinking water. The government of Balochistan as well as the Federal Government need to start acting on this issue as soon as possible. If they don’t Gwadar will be nothing more than a wasted opportunity, which would be a tragedy. SHAHRYAR IBRAHIM Karachi Published in Daily Times, November 24nd 2017.
