In response to the escalating environmental challenges, Former Minister for Transport, Ibrahim Hasan Murad has called for immediate and year-round cloud-seeding operations to combat climate change and improve air quality. Murad stresses that immediate action is necessary to address the worsening environmental crisis, particularly in Lahore, which is consistently ranked among the most polluted cities in the world. On November 1, 2023, Former Minister Ibrahim Murad took a pivotal step by formally requesting the UAE government to assist Punjab in combating its climate challenges through cloud-seeding technology. The UAE, renowned for its expertise in cloud seeding, conducts over 300 missions annually. In response, the UAE government generously deployed two specialized aircraft and a technical team to Pakistan, carrying out the nation’s first-ever cloud-seeding mission. Over two weeks, the UAE team successfully induced artificial rainfall, delivering immediate relief to the region. This operation led to a significant improvement in the Air Quality Index (AQI), considerably reducing air pollution within a 10-15 km radius of Lahore. Ibrahim Murad emphasized that cloud-seeding, when deployed in skies with sufficient moisture, can increase rainfall by up to 30-35% offering a promising solution to mitigate smog. Murad stresses that Pakistan should adopt this technology on a year-round basis to effectively combat smog and climate change, following the example of countries like India and China, which have already implemented cloud-seeding missions as part of their environmental strategies. Pakistan has entered a phase where continuous cloud-seeding is no longer a mere option but a necessity to tackle our environmental challenges and combat the devastating effects of smog, said Ibrahim Hasan Murad. We must take collective responsibility and act urgently to preserve the environment for our children and future generations.
