UMERKOT: Speakers have stressed to foster more mass mobilisation on breastfeeding to minimise chest cancer and increase physical and mental growth of newborn. Speaking at an arranged-event on ‘sustaining breastfeeding together’ to trigger week-long drive on breast-feeding in wake of global call by Skar Welfare Organisation, a local non-governmental organisation in collaboration with Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Alliance at Padhrio Village of Umerkot Mohammad Bux, Executive Director of host NGO said that breastfeeding remained important for new born up to initial six month to increase their physical and mental growth. Increasing cancer among mothers was one of the causes behind not feeding their children. Pakistan’s rate of breastfeeding stands 38 percent while bottle-feeding was 41 percent with growing trend. Therefore, it is time to foster message of mothers’ feed in masses to save and protect children from alarming consequences. Sardar Bhayo, social activist said that a survey was carried in 2013 had revealed that 44 percent children in Pakistan were stunting, therefore, it was necessary to aware mothers to breastfeed their new born even before drop of water. Through breastfeeding around 823,000 children and 20,000 mothers could be saved each year. Pakistan stands 149 out of 188 courtiers to meet the global targets, he added.
