KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Friday sought progress report from National Accountability Bureau on the corruption cases against former Inspector General Police, Sindh Ghulam Hiader Jalami and others A division bench of the SHC headed by Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh heard the bail application of DSP Mir Muhammad and others, co-accused in the NAB reference on illegal appointments in SRP Hyderabad against former IGP Sindh Ghulam Hider Jamali and other high police officers. During the course of hearing, Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh remarked that on whose instructions the police officer made illegal appointment in police. “After all someone would have asked them to induct their men in police and given them chit,” the court remarked. The CJ asked NAB as to why it was not going against those who are the root cause of corruption. Upon this, NAB special prosecutor said that former IGP Ghulam Haider Jamali and other high ups of the police were also accused in the reference. He told the court that the Bureau had completed investigation against the former IGP and other police high ups in the illegal appointment case. He said that a reference had already been filed in the matter. The prosecutor said that the Bureau had already presented details of the reference filed against the petitioners and others for illegal appointments in SRP. The court while clubbing the bail applications of the petitioners with that of former IGP Ghulam Hiader Jamali and others adjourned hearing till September 15, 2017. The court had already extended the interim bail granted to former Inspector General Sindh Police Ghulam Haider Jamali and other police officers in the case. The National Accountability Bureau had filed the reference against Ghulam Haider Jamali, the former inspector general of Sindh police, and other police officers. The former IGP and then finance AIG Fida Hussain Shah and six other police officials which have been accused of allegedly making illegal appointments by misusing their authority in the Sindh Reserve Police (SRP), Hyderabad, causing a loss of over Rs50 million to the national exchequer. Initially, the Supreme Court had appointed three-member fact-finding committee to identify illegalities in recruitments and later, in the light of the committees` recommendations, the apex court had referred the matter to NAB to investigate it. The reference said that former IG Jamali, AIG Shah, then training DIG Sahab Mazhar Bhalli, then Sindh Reserve Police ADIG Aitezaz Ahmed Goraya, then West SSP retired Captain Ghulam Azfar Mahesar, then Matiari district SP Amjad Ahmed Shaikh, Kashmore district SP Umar Tufail and then Tharparkar district SP Khalid Mustafa Korai were allegedly involved in illegal recruitments in the SRP, Hyderabad. It added that some 881 appointments were made illegally. The appointments were made against vacant posts of constables, computer operators and others. Published in Daily Times, August 19th 2017.
