LAHORE: Dr Yasmin Rashid, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI)’s candidate for NA-120 by-poll, on Monday reportedly submitted an application with the returning officer concerned against Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz for allegedly violating election code of conduct. In the application, Dr Yasmin Rashid raised objections over the meetings headed by Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of the disqualified prime minister Nawaz Sharif who is also running the election campaign of PML-N’s candidate Kusloom Nawaz, at the Chief Minister’s House located at Model Town in connection with the NA-120 by-election. “The Chief Minister’s House in Model Town has been declared a public office and it cannot be used for any electioneering campaign from any person,” the application said. Dr Yasmin said Maryam Nawaz had violated election code of conduct by holding meetings at the Chief Minister’s House. He demanded an action against Maryam Nawaz. Maryam Nawaz Sharif had reportedly held two meetings with several party leaders and office-bearers of several union councils, which fall in the NA-120 constituency, in which some federal ministers, including Pervaiz Malik, also participated. Dr Yasmin Rashid demanded the RO to ensure stoppage of use of public office for any political activity, especially in connection with the by-election in NA-120. Sources, however, said that Pervez Malik, who was initially involved in running the NA-120 by-election campaign, had also submitted an affidavit with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), informing the commission of his “separation” from the election campaign. Separately, the PTI Monday filed a resolution in the Notice Branch of the Punjab Assembly against the alleged harassment of PTI’s women workers at the hands of some PML-N workers. The resolution was submitted by the PTI’s female legislator Nabila Hakim Ali in which she strongly criticised and condemned the alleged harassment of female workers of her party during the election campaign in the NA-120. Nabila in her resolution has said that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) has become unnerved after the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif. She said that the PML-N workers had alleged harassed PTI workers out of frustration. The resolution demanded the provincial government to take action against those responsible for the incident. According to a PTI’s statement, some PML-N workers had allegedly harassed women workers of the PTI during the election campaign in NA-120. PTI leaders – Dr Yasmin Rahid and Ejaz Chaudhry had claimed that police were reluctant to file a FIR against the alleged harassment of party’s workers. Published in Daily Times, August 29th 2017.
