LAHORE: Presence of a poisonous gas in Sanjdi coal mine located in the suburbs of Quetta killed 4 workers on Friday. According to Rescue officials, the workers, who were working thousands of feet deep into the mine, died from the release of poisonous gas in the mine. The workers then became unconscious due to suffocation and were unable to get out. After their bodies were retrieved, they were shifted to a nearby hospital for medical help. A great majority of the workers who work in these mines in Balochistan belong to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the victims of this incident too belonged to Swat’s Shangla district. This incident raises questions about the condition of the workers working in these mines. According to the labour union members, the safety arrangements are questionable because most of the workers are not given protective gear and they ultimately lose their lives in such incidents.
