KARACHI: Armed with cameras many youngsters take to the streets and other recreational spots on weekly and other holidays to capture the scenes as part of quest to explore their inner photographer. It has been observed that street photography and random photography is gaining popularity most among young aspiring photographers from all over Karachi. At Farer Hall, young boys could be seen shooting along with their colleagues and full range of equipment, including reflectors, tripod, diffuser and umbrellas. Fahad Khalid, a young photographer, studying in the Iqra University, said that he bought his digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera for Rs 110,000. He said that photography was not an easy job in the current circumstances as they had to answer many questions when asked about the purpose of taking photos. “Farer Hall is an amazing place for photography because it is considered Karachi’s most iconic building having venetian-gothic style, which attracts photographers,” he said. Muhammad Ibrahim, another youngster, said that he had invested his all savings to buy a professional camera, as he wanted to satiate his passion to capture pictures of historical places. Aman Ullha, a photographer from Layari, who started photography in 2014, said he had become a professional photographer and his favourite places were Bin Qasim Park, Customs House and Port Grand. While sharing his experience, Umair Ahmed said some people refused to be photographed but there were others who were always ready to be photographed. “I never say no to them. Sometimes, they want me to send them photos via emails or WhatsApp and I do send them,” he said. Another professional photographer, Ali Shah (Alee), said: “I charge Rs 15,000 to 20,000 per shoot.” “We don’t remember days, we remember moments”, said Khan Maxood, a professional photographer. He revealed that Pakistan was in top list of DSLR cameras users. “Youngsters have no proper training facilities for using DSLR cameras but few institutions are working with an aim to promote photography culture and they are arranging many events like Youth Film Festival, Street Photography and Nature Photography.” Published in Daily Times, October 3rd 2017.
