KARACHI: In a surprising move, the Sindh government has appointed at least 400 Muslims as sweepers in just a just Shaheed Benazirabad (Nawabshah) district, Daily Times has learnt. According to sources, there is a complete ban on all kinds of recruitments in all the departments of Sindh whether it be permanent or on contract basis. Moreover, the post of sweeper is to be meant for non-Muslims and the appointments of Muslims on these posts would deprive the non-Muslims from their right of job. This surprising revelation surfaced when these 400 sweepers approached Secretary Local Government Department Baqaullah Unar for extension in their contract. However, the secretary clearly refused to do so citing ban on recruitment and violation of formalities in the recruitment, sources added. With the refusal of secretary, these sweepers approached the former chief minister Sindh two and a half months ago and the extension was given to them by CM himself while using his discretionary powers. “These 400 people have been appointed on contact basis and all are posted in Shaheed Benazirabad district”, sources said. Sources said that the Local Government has been facing massive political motivated appointments and more than 12,000 people have been appointed in tenure of former LG minister Aga Siraj Durrani without fulfilling the codal formalities. “The Local Government authorities have compiled lists of political appointees and submitted it to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for further actions”, sources said. When contacted, Secretary Local Government Department Baqaullah Unar told Daily Times that 400 people approached him for extension in their jobs as sweepers. “I clearly refused them to given extension then these employees got extension from the former chief minister Qaim Ali Shah”, the secretary added.
