Punjab govt to launch app for women’s safety

Published on: January 4, 2017 11:03 AM

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s Special Monitoring Unit (SMU) is launching the Women’s Safety Smartphone Application (app) on January 4 (today). The app is being initiated in collaboration with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority and the Punjab Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW).

The smartphone app has a special feature whereby access to the PCSW helpline, SMU’s Women-on-Wheels campaign and the police is provided with the touch of a button.

SMU Law and Order head Salman Sufi said that the Punjab government was eager to launch the app as it would provide women an efficient and effective platform to report incidents of harassment.

PCSW Chairperson Fauzia Viqar informed media that the app includes a button which connects the user to the Punjab Women’s Helpline, allowing access to information on available laws and services for women. The app can also be used to address complaints of inaction or discrimination by government institutions.

The app will also allow women to notify the Police Integrated Command, Control and Communication (PPIC3) officials of any kind of harassment they have faced along with their exact geographic location. After the notification, a team of first responders will be dispatched immediately to the location.
