Sir: Recent record-breaking spell of rain in Karachi has wrecked most parts including the posh areas like DHA. According to Pakistan’s Meteorological Department normal rainfall in Karachi in the month of August is 68 millimeters but this year an alarming number of 587.5 millimeters was recorded which was apocalyptic in some ways. The metropolis is considered to be the economic lifeline of any country. The qualm has remained in the hearts and heads of sane residents of Karachi as why the authorities can’t harvest this blessing from the nature of abundant rain. Pakistan has one of the world’s largest irrigation systems but regrettably speaking it lacks a proper drainage system. This rainwater can be preserved for future use by building small dams and micro reservoirs in and around Karachi. The concerted efforts need to be made for saving the lives of people as reportedly 11 people were killed due to rain-related incidents in Karachi.
