Communities may be rushing toward new technologies, particularly 5G networks, without considering health consequences. The 5G networks, unlike previous technologies, rely on high-frequency radio waves emitted from small cells in close proximity. Regulators rely on standards more than two decades old that focus on heat rather than other effects of radio-frequency waves and electromagnetic radiation. Governments want their companies to be leaders in the new industry. However, Switzerland has ordered an immediate and indefinite halt to the roll out due to serious “health concerns.”

The first reported injury of 5G in a news report comes from Switzerland, where 5G has been launched in 102 locations.

As soon as the antennas were installed, several residents and entire families in the heart of Geneva reported similar unusual symptoms of loud ringing in the ear, intense headaches, unbearable earaches, insomnia, chest pain, fatigue and not feeling well in the house.

Switzerland was among the first countries to begin deploying 5G, but health fears over radiation from the antennas that carry the next-generation mobile technology have sparked a nationwide revolt.

Demonstrators against the technology are due to fill the streets of Bern later this month, but already a number of cantons have been pressured to put planned constructions of 5G-compatible antennae on ice.

The technology has been swept up in the deepening trade war between China and the United States, which has tried to rein in Chinese giant Huawei – the world’s leader in superfast 5G equipment – over fears it will allow Beijing to spy on communications from countries that use its products and services.

Notably, the first Global 5G Opposition Day was held in January. Cities and countries have taken action against 5G – with many even completely banning it.

In December, hundreds of doctors, scientists, engineers, and public officials asked President Trump for a moratorium on 5G because of biological, environmental, and safety risks . Multiple 5G lawsuits have also been filed in the U.S.

Opponents of the new technology are trying to gather the 100,000 signatures they need to force a referendum on imposing a moratorium on the technology until its risks can be properly assessed.

In February, Switzerland attributed 5G frequencies to three major operators, Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt, and the operators have been pushing the cutting-edge technology in television advertisements and on billboards.
