Women trade unions vow to protect rights of cotton workers

HYDERABAD: Trade unions of women cotton pickers vowed to work for protection of the rights of cotton workers during the formation meeting held by Sindh Community Foundation in Hyderbad on October 11.

According to details, more than 25 representatives from different trade unions of women cotton pickers attended the meeting including the Roshni Mazdoor union,  Seeta Mazdoor union, Bhitai Mazdoor union, Bakhtawar Mazdoor union from the respective villages Sukio Mirjat, Jamal Dahri , Hyder Prahyar and Tara.

The head of Sindh Community Foundation (SCF), Javed Hussain, shared the issues and problems of the women cotton pickers and case for legislation. He said that Sindh Industrial Relation Act has provided right to association but the process to form an association is very complicated in the province.

Shahnaz Sheedi, women rights activist of South Asia Partnership Pakistan (SAPP), also stated that the government should be more attentive towards laborer rights as they are not properly treated.

A cotton picker named Shabana from village Jamal Dahri, who was elected as convener of the network, expressed her concerns and demanded fair wages legislation to improve the conditions of workers in the country.

The network of trade unions aimed to work collectively for the legislation of the rights of laborers and fix wages for the  cotton workers.
