Policy to ensure food quality at makeshift markets on the cards

Author: Staff Report

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) and the district administration will jointly prepare a comprehensive policy in order to ensure the availability of healthy food at makeshift markets.

This was revealed by PFA Director General Captain (r) Muhammad Usman during a visit to Mian Plaza Sunday Bazaar in Johar Town area along with a food safety team. He went to different stalls of fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, spices and others.

He said that PFA had arranged a weekly schedule for continuous checking of Sunday bazaars across Punjab.

To a query, he said that overall food quality was satisfactory in Sunday Bazaar, however, PFA discarded approximately 100kg unwholesome food, which was confiscated during checking of different stalls.

PFA disposed of around 80kg rotten vegetables and fruits, 12kg tainted pepper and four packets of vermicelli. He said that adulterated pepper was discarded owing to contamination of hazardous chemicals and other ingredients in it.

Further, the PFA’s enforcement team punished two chicken sellers, three fish points and one karyana store with heavy fine over substandard operations.
