Police submit challan in Tayyaba torture case

ISLAMABAD: The police on Thursday submitted a challan before a judicial magistrate against the officer on special duty (OSD) Raja Khurram Ali Khan and his wife Maheen Zafar, who were booked for keeping a 10-year-old housemaid, Tayyaba, in wrongful confinement and subjecting her to torture.

The challan was submitted by the Industrial Area Police Station in the court of Judicial Magistrate Haider Shah, in which the couple was declared guilty of torturing and abusing the maid.

In the submitted challan, the police charged the former additional district and sessions judge Raja Khurram Ali Khan and his wife Maheen Zafar with the offences of keeping Tayyaba in wrongful confinement, torturing and abusing her and not providing her proper treatment.

The medical report of Tayyaba, including her DNA report, details of the additional charges imposed on the couple, statements of witnesses and the brief investigation report were also attached with the challan.

It is pertinent to mention here that OSD Raja Khurram Ali and his wife Maheen Zafar secured a compromise with the parents of Tayyaba, on the basis of which the couple was granted interim bail in the torture case by a sessions court.

The Supreme Court took up a suo motu notice of the alleged compromise and termed it ‘unacceptable’ after the father of Tayyaba disowned the deal. The case was later transferred to the Islamabad High Court.

The couple and the parents of the minor housemaid were ordered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Raja Asif Mehmood to appear before the court on the next hearing of the case.
