Police blame poor facilities and staff shortage for rise in crime rate

LARKANA: All the four police stations of Dokri Taluka are in shabby condition. They were never repaired or reconstructed despite the fact that the PPP has remained in power for the last ten years and it has been winning from this area. The four police stations include Mohenjo Daro, Fatehpur, Seehar and Veehar police stations.

Two, out of four, police stations have been shifted to the Irrigation and Hospital department buildings.

The buildings of these police stations became so dangerous that two police stations were shifted to other places which include Fatehpur and Seehar police stations. Likewise, the Mohenjo Daro police station has no lockup.

Fatehpur Station House Officer (SHO) left the police station to avail 14 days leave and the sources said that many cops of the said police station are on leave due to which the crime rate in the limits of this police station is on the rise.

Seehar SHO, Liaquat Ali Khajar said that his police station was established in a government hospital where no lockup facility was available adding that the original building was dilapidated.

Veehar SHO, Mumtaz Ali Siyal said that no repair or renovation work of police station building was made in the last 40 years due to which it has become useless for police to stay there anymore.

Police sources further said that the cops posted at these police stations are less than the required number and they were deployed for the security of influential people. Due to the shortage of police force, sources further added, many police pickets have also been removed.

Mohenjo Daro police station is facing shortage of 35 constables, Seehar police station is short of 5 ASIs and 47 constables, 4 ASIs are needed at Fatehpur police station along with 15 constables and Veehar police station badly needs two ASIs and ten cops.

Due to these issues, the law and order situation in the area is unsatisfactory as robberies and bike snatching is rampant along with other social evils like running of gambling and drugs dens.

The SHOs of these police stations, while talking to the media on Friday, said that they are facing shortage of sanctioned staff and if they are provided with the sanctioned staff, crime rate in the area will be curbed. They said that the buildings of all the police stations should reconstructed for which the Sindh Government should allocate funds so that the police could be able to discharge its legal and moral duties efficiently.
