ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Imran Khan apologized to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for breaching electoral rules when he publicly stamped his ballot paper while voting in General Elections 2018.
A suo moto action was taken against Khan and heard today by a four-member bench, headed by the chief election comissioner. The legal action was taken against Khan who publicly stamped his ballot paper, instead of casting his vote in secrecy, as per the Election Act.
Photographs and videos went viral on social media, showing the PTI chief publicly casting his vote in NA-53. Khan’s counsel Babar Awan presented a written reply to the ECP, claiming that the candidate did not breach electoral rules intentionally.
He claims the voting screen had fallen due to a large number of journalists and onlookers being present. He went further on to seek an end to the case and a request to the ECP to issue Imran Khan’s victory notification from NA-53.
