ISLAMABAD: The Panama Leaks hearing resumed on Wednesday headed by a five-member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) led by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa.

According to media reports, the Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf continued his arguments in the court today. He informed the court that he had taken a look at the records and reached the conclusion that the Sharif family had taken loan on foreign currency accounts.

In response to this, Justice Azmat Saeed remarked that the court had been told that investments had been made with the Qatar Prince, and no foreign currency account had been mentioned previously. Justice Saeed further asked the attorney general to assist the court instead of becoming party to the case.

The attorney general continued his arguments and said that the Hudaibiya Paper Mill case should be kept separate from the Panama Paper case.

Justice Azmat Saeed responded that if the Hudaibiya Paper Mill case was not based on facts, why was the attorney general trying to avoid it? He added that National Accountability Bureau had proven to be a dead organisation and that the court had to make an intervention if institutions failed.

Speaking about the disqualification of the prime minister, the attorney general said according to the law, the reference about the disqualification of the PM is first sent to the speaker, and if he does not respond only then can the court intervene.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s counsel Naeem Bukhari responded to this and said that the Supreme Court had sent former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gillani home even though $65 million were never returned to the public exchequer.

The hearing of the case has been adjourned till Thursday.
