Sir: The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — also known as the Iran Nuclear Deal was signed and ratified by the US and Iran in 2015. Its main purpose was to limit Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium so that it could not produce nuclear weapons. Most analysts and historians only had positive feedback for the deal. Most said it was in the interest of preserving peace in the Middle East.
Recently however, US President Donald Trump announced that the US would be withdrawing from the deal. He claimed that this was because the deal had failed to stop Iran from developing ballistic missiles. He termed the JCPOA ‘decaying’ and ‘rotten’ and claimed that it was an ‘embarrassment’ to the US. Now Tehran will have to face economic sanctions imposed by Washington again.
Time and again, the US has proven itself to be an untrustworthy, unpredictable policy destroyer. The international community has been left extremely disappointed by Trump’s decision, and this includes the leaders of Germany, France and the UK. The Kremlin has also condemned the decision.
