Why put Sharif family on ECL, asks Marriyum Aurangzeb

Author: Yassen Hashmi

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb has on Thursday said that the government would look into the request filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to put the Sharif family members’ names on Exit Control List (ECL) but would first see whether the demand was appropriate or not.

Talking to media ahead of the corruption hearing at accountability court, Marriyum said that not a single evidence of corruption had been found against the Sharif family.

“They haven’t provided any evidence. A huge trunk of papers submitted by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in Panama Papers case contained no evidence. They are filing new supplementary references every few days because they haven’t been able to bring any evidence. Then why put their names on the ECL?”, said Marriyum.

The minister said that the names of the suspects are put on ECL when they are fugitives while in this case the former Prime Minister and his family were regularly appearing before the courts even if called thrice a week.

“These are the final stages of the case and now they are filing a plea to put names on ECL. Why? How do they know the decision already?” she said. Marriyum added that the interior ministry will look into the merits of the plea and decide accordingly.

It is pertinent to mention here that NAB had on Tuesday requested the government to put the Sharif family on ECL.
