LAHORE: Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) Secretary General Maulana Abdul Hameed Watto has said that religious leadership of Pakistan should play its role to educate people on blasphemy law.

Talking to representatives of different religious sects here on Friday, he said that Islamic history is witness to the fact that non-Muslims, living in an Islamic society, were given all due rights.

In his remarks, Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) Chairman Hafiz Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi has said that the council will continue its struggle for unity of Ummah.

Ashrafi said that the constitution of Pakistan categorically defined rights of Muslims and non-Muslims, and any group, individual and organisation could not be allowed to usurp constitutional rights of any Pakistani.

The PUC chief said it was not good to associate an individual’s acts with teachings of the heavenly religions. He said that inter-faith harmony and inter-sect coexistence was need of the time. He appreciated the armed forces for “eradication” of terrorists’ organisations from Pakistan, and added that said General (r) Raheed Sharif had been tasked to lead the Islamic Military Alliance for his heroic leadership to flush out terrorism from Pakistan.
