Sir: It is unfortunate to see that the relationships in today’s society are tantamount to disposable commodities. The essence of sincerity, honesty and truthfulness in various relationships and commitments is gradually in decline. Premarital commitments, so-called engagements, which are settled between families, are viewed as the least important. Many families view such commitments as fragile and consider no shame in ending them without any valid reason. This is especially true for the families of the boy, which usually initiate the marriage call. Male domination is heavily prevalent in our society and in many cases women are deemed to be mere replaceable commodities. There is no regard for human emotions in terminating premarital commitments such as engagements, since usually the woman’s emotions are hurt. Religious and moral principles are ignored and violated all the time. The element of sympathy, consideration and a careful attitude seems to be missing in our people. There stands a dire need for such families to instil a sense of empathy, courtesy and consideration when settling their lifelong marital commitments.
