Sir: One of Pakistan’s most popular and in-demand exports — mangoes — is facing a disastrous situation as a few large shipments of this delicious fruit have been intercepted by EU customs authorities. If reports are to be believed, we are inching incredibly close to a complete ban on mango exports to the EU, a move that will have devastating effects on our economy and will take years to reverse. The reason seems to be unsatisfactory standards and quality of the fruit, something being faced by Indian exporters as well.
It is urged that all possible steps be taken to make sure a complete ban is not enforced while there is still time to do so. We cannot take another financial beating in the international marketplace.
