Moving on

Sir: The Cuban flag was raised over Havana’s embassy in Washington on Monday for the first time in 54 years as the US and Cuba formally restored relations, opening a new chapter of engagement between the former two Cold War foes. I fully support this new approach taken by the leaders of both countries. We are living in times of economic depression and diminishing resources. Poverty has been creeping into many economies around the world and every day a great many people are exposed to an uncertain future. It is about time that countries work on building bridges rather than building fences. The solution for today’s economic downturn lies in the fact that countries should be joining hands to open up their markets and share their core competencies. Resources have always been scarce; it is about time that countries start conserving and sharing them instead of wasting these precious resources.
This historical event also reminds us that there is no problem in this world that cannot be worked out. In my opinion, Pakistan and India should also follow the same path taken by the US and Cuba, and improve their existing ties. People are sick and tired of political differences. It is about time to resolve all such differences and embark upon the path of economic prosperity.
