Desert existence

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The destructive changes in the ozone layer have resulted in negative effects to our beautiful planet. Ankara dam that was built in 1939 stretches over an area of 17,000 metres. It is the sole source of water supply to the inhabitants of Gwadar. To my dismay, it is gradually drying out. The government is neglecting this issue and would have to endure the consequences of such mismanagement of dams that can be efficiently utilized for power generation and are instead poorly maintained. Ankara dam is playing a pivotal role in catering to the water needs in rural areas like Jiwani, Peshakaan and Nalent. Ironically, a majority of Pakistan is complaining about floodwater whereas our desert existence here lives in hope of the pearl-like raindrops. This dry spell, especially in the monsoon season, has compelled citizens of this region to move to other areas of Balochistan. We here in Turbat are in agony and look forward to a rain shower. Undoubtedly, water is understood to be amongst the main components of human life and survival without it is impossible. A lot of people opt for water tankers, but that is not a permanent solution. It is tragic that newspapers are overflowing with the floods problem and we don’t have enough water to live a decent life. My sincere appeal to the government is to take substantial constructive steps to find a solution to our existence in the desert.
