No pity for the homeless

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The government is being plain nasty with slum dwellers of late. The bulldozing of homes in the largest slum area of Islamabad, called Afghan Basti, has created a storm on social media and in civil society circles. No doubt, the way the authorities went about this business was terrible; homes were wiped out in minutes and the poor, impoverished slum dwellers — men, women and children — looked on in dismay, with tears in their eyes. They have nowhere to call home now.
Even if these are illegal, encroached settlements, it is the duty of the government to first make some arrangements elsewhere for these people before going about demolishing their homes. However, what can one expect? This is a heartless government with no room in their souls for the anguished cries of the downtrodden and voiceless.
