ISLAMABAD – Indian police arrested veteran Hurriyet leader Syed Ali Gilani along with his associates outside his residence in Srinagar, on Friday , when he tried to lead a march towards Sopore town.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Ali Gilani and other Hurriyet leaders including the All Parties Hurriyet Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Shabbir Ahmad Shah had given the call for the march to register protest against the recent killing of pro-freedom activists by Indian armed agents in the town.

The police shifted Syed Ali Gilani to Humhama Police Station. The authorities placed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Ayaz Akbar and Altaf Ahmad Shah under house arrest in Srinagar and lodged Muhammad Yasin Malik, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, Hilal Ahmed War and Shahid-ul-Islam at different police stations.

The actions have been taken to stop the leaders from visiting Sopore and expressing solidarity with the families of the pro-freedom activists who were recently martyred by Indian armed agents in different areas of Sopore. On the other hand, the puppet authorities have imposed curfew-like restrictions in Srinagar and Sopore to thwart the march.
