ISLAMABAD – Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali will take oath as the new Chief Justice of Pakistan on September 10, a private news channel reported on Saturday.
According to a notification issued by the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Jawwad S Khawaja will retire on September 9 after which Justice Jamali will take oath as the new chief justice.
Justice Jamali was born on December 30, 1951 in Hyderabad, Sindh. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from the University of Sindh in 1971 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Law in 1973 from the aforementioned university.
He was enrolled at the Sindh Bar Council as an advocate of lower court in 1975 and as an advocate of the Sindh High Court in 1977. He was enrolled as an advocate of the Supreme Court in 1987. He also served as a lecturer at Hyderabad Law College for about two years.
Justice Jamali took oath as a judge of Sindh High Court in May 1998. He is also one of the judges who refused to take fresh oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order No 1 of 2007. He was elevated as judge of the Supreme Court on August 3, 2009. He also served as acting chief election commissioner of the Election Commission from July 3, 2014 to December 4, 2014.
