When food falters

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The consumption of unhygienic food has created a terrible situation in Pakistan. The general public is unaware of food hygiene. Contaminated and unhygienic food consumption leads to severe health problems and even death. Dining at restaurants and the huge consumption of fast food have raised many serious concerns regarding public health. There are no strict rules regarding food hygiene followed by eateries, even some high-end expensive hotels. Recently, the Punjab government launched an operation against such eateries, fining and sealing those that are not complying with strict hygiene codes and standards. According to a report, globally 2.2 million people (mostly children) die of foodborne and waterborne diarrheal diseases annually.
This is a serious issue. The concerned authorities should work to curb the menace of food profiteers who are involved in selling substandard food to the public.
