An unfortunate controversy

Author: Maria Sani

Sir: An unfortunate controversy erupted on Iqbal Day this year when the federal government and three provinces did not announce a public holiday on November 9 while the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa decided to declare it a public holiday across the province.
The nation needs to understand that Iqbal Day is not merely the birth anniversary of Allama Iqbal but a day to recall the philosophy of Iqbal, a day to enlighten the youth of Pakistan about Iqbal’s message. They need to be acquainted with the significant and recurrent themes in his poetry, particularly the concept of Khudi (self) and the revival of the glorious past of Muslims.
His service through the pen and action for awakening the masses from the slumber of ignorance does not deserve a controversy. Instead of indulging in disagreements, we should emphasise understanding the real spirit of Iqbal’s teachings. We ought to be more concerned about spreading the narrative of Iqbal through organising different conferences, seminars and symposiums rather than declaring it a public holiday.
Above all, understanding the rational basis of religion, prioritising the national and collective interests over personal ones and by critically analysing ourselves in accordance with Iqbal’s teachings we can move toward the pathway of success.
