PML-N, PTI leading in Islamabad LG polls

ISLAMABAD: Unofficial results of the local government elections in the federal capital showed the PML-N and PTI leading with the most seats.

In what were the first-ever local government elections in the capital, PML-N and PTI locked horns in a tough contest, with the former securing 14 and the latter 18 seats, respectively, according to unofficial results. The independents, meanwhile, have bagged 10 seats. The total seats up for grabs were 50. The elections were held in 32 rural and 18 urban union councils, with a mixed response from the voters. The PML-N is leading in the rural areas, while the PTI has taken the lead in the urban areas.

The PTI won a seat in Union Council-37 (G10/1 and G10/2) where its candidate for chairman, Malik Sajid Mehmood secured 1,122 votes against the candidate of PML-N, Ch Iftikhar, who got 1,048 votes. In UC-49, Syed Zeeshan Naqvi of PML-N won the coveted seat of chairman. Similarly, Waseem Sana Malik of PML-N secured his berth as chairman from union council 18, while Raja Khurram, a candidate of PTI, has won from UC-8. Ali Awan, another PTI candidate won the slot of chairman from UC-40. From UC-12, PTI’s candidate Hasnain Shah has been elected chairman.

As many as 2,396 candidates were in the run in 50 union councils of federal capital for 13 seats in each union council, including one of chairman and one of vice chairman, two women members, six general members, one each youth, minority and peasant or labourer.
