Sindh to again approach Centre on Rangers issue

Author: Staff Report

KARACHI: The Sindh Cabinet on Wednesday decided to write another letter to the federal government on the issue of policing powers of Rangers in Sindh.

A high-level meeting of the provincial cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, however, decided not to take the issue to the court for now.

Advisor to CM on Information Maula Bakhsh Chandio said that Sindh doesn’t want to restrain Rangers from working but every institute should act within its jurisdiction. He said that the provincial government does not want any conflict with the federation so the prime minister should himself resolve the issue. The cabinet members criticised the federation for ‘disrespecting’ the resolution passed by the Sindh Assembly. It was also decided in the meeting that the prime minister and the Interior minister will be taken into confidence on the resolution as well.

On Tuesday, the Interior Ministry had rejected the provincial government’s summary and extended Rangers’ special powers for another 60 days.

The Sindh cabinet meeting was hurriedly called to ponder over the Interior Ministry’s decision and chalk out the future course of action.

Talking to media after meeting with National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in Karachi, Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani said that the federal government should not have rejected the resolution straightaway. Federation’s attitude on the matter is regrettable, he said.

Durrani said that Nawaz Sharif’s government existed today due to Asif Ali Zardari.

Provincial Minister Sikandar Mandhro said that the Sindh Assembly resolution was passed in accordance with the law and constitution. He said the provincial government can still use several options on the matter.
