ISLAMABAD: A Supreme Court bench observed on Monday that those at the helm of affairs will face contempt of court proceedings if its orders were not implemented.

While heading a two-member bench hearing a contempt of court case on Monday, Justice Azmat Saeed remarked that no one would be allowed to defy the court’s orders. “If the court orders are not implemented, then we can also summon the prime minister. Once the prime minister is summoned, then he will not return to his office. There is much capacity in Adiala Jail. No one will be allowed to defy court’s orders. Establishment Division secretary has been summoned repeatedly but he did not turn up to file a response.” Expressing displeasure over non-appearance of the Establishment Division secretary the court ordered issuance of promotion order of Customs Officer Umar Farooq within 48 hours as per its order. Arif Chaudhry, counsel for Farooq, told the court that Establishment Division was claiming that the summary has been sent to the prime minister for approval, but on ground, “a game was being played” with the court for the last eight months.

Upon this, Justice Saeed remarked “if the situation is so, then we can summon the prime minister, who will be in trouble once he turns up.” The attorney general assured the court that its orders will be implemented.
