Sir: Reportedly, teacher leaders during one of their meetings with the secretary education had demanded perks and privileges. The secretary alleged that teachers do not teach and majority of them do not have capacity to teach. Upon this, teacher leaders challenged the secretary that all teachers in Sindh are competent. The argument ended when teacher leaders accepted the challenge of proving their competency by going through a test. But when they see that the secretary education was serious in going ahead with the proposal, the teachers association announced a boycott of the secretary education’s attempt.

It is unfortunate that teachers, who are considered the fountainhead of knowledge, are afraid of failure in exams. Many teachers, despite being qualified and competent to teach, sit idle and allow their ability of teaching to erode and do not use their knowledge for years and forget everything. During elections, some high school teachers beg to the returning officers for removing their names from the duty of presiding officers because they are unable to read and write simple English. The secretary education Sindh, Mr Fazal Pechoho, despite political pressure, is doing an excellent job to weed out deadwood from the education department in Sindh. The secretary has also announced that the salaries of 11,000 teachers having no record and failed to confirm themselves through biometric would be stopped. These steps are vital for the survival and prosperity of Sindh as without revamping dying education system, there would be no hope for a better future.
