Misconceptions on Metro Train

Author: By Syed Ali Qasim

There are many aspects of any reality but unfortunately we choose the one that suits our interests. Now a days, there is a lot of hue and cry in media regarding the Orange Line Metro Train Project in Lahore. Some people are unduly criticizing this project and expressing their concerns that this train would not only destroy the architectural beauty of archaeological sites of Lahore but also put the lives of people at risk. However, these are just apprehensions which have nothing to do with reality. Unfortunately, almost every development project in our country has met with intense criticism by the media and the opposition. It seems that we have developed a habit of criticizing everything. However, one must look into the harsh reality.

The truth is that the Punjab government under Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has initiated this project to provide state of the art travelling facility to the people of Lahore who are deprived of standardized commuting facilities. The track of this international standard project passes close to busy roads, thickly populated areas and historical buildings so that more and more citizens may benefit from this modern transport facility. For the protection of archaeological sites, this Metro Train has been given underground passage in these areas. Under the guidance of archaeological experts, the government of Punjab has taken all out measures for the safety of these archaeological buildings and structures.

Moreover, the government embarked on the project with proper planning and Rs. 20 billion has been allocated for the affected people to compensate them for relocation of their houses and businesses. In addition, as per the agreement with China, the responsibility for civil works of this project lies with Pakistan whereas the payment will be made by an Axis bank of China.

The Government of Punjab is trying its best to fulfil its responsibilities regarding the preservation of historical and architectural heritage of Lahore. The protection of these historical buildings has been ensured through utilizing specialized technical expertise. Moreover, a specific budget has also been allocated for beautification of these historical sites.

There is an objective reality out there, but we view it through the spectacles of our mis-beliefs, stigmatic attitudes and self-asserted values. Therefore, it is requested that to stop all this criticism as a sound and effective transport system is essential to pave the way for the socio-economic development of countries like Pakistan.
