LAHORE: Senator Siraj-ul-Haq, chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami, has termed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s warning to the NAB as astonishing and said that a transparent and impartial accountability could not be expected in such a situation.
In a statement here on Wednesday, he said that the parties in power were trying to protect their leaders and workers. He said that restraining the NAB and placing restrictions on the constitutional organisations was tantamount to obstructing the law.
Haq said the main complaint the nation had about the NAB was that it was proceeding on the basis of likes and dislikes, and not in accordance with the law. He said that small fish were being hauled up, but those who plundered trillions of rupees were not being arrested. Besides, he said, those who plundered billions of rupees were given clean chits after they paid back paltry amounts.
The JI chief said that in view of this state of affairs his party had decided to launch a countrywide campaign against corruption. He said the JI campaign was not against any individual; it was aimed at improving the working of the institutions. He appealed to all patriotic and law abiding people to unite against corruption. He said that Pakistan and corruption could not go together and the masses should rise to protect the institutions before it is too late.
