Hunger strike

Author:

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) workers and leaders are observing a token hunger strike in Karachi for the reversal of a ban imposed by the Lahore High Court on the coverage of speeches, display of pictures and activities of Altaf Hussain in both the print and electronic media. The four-day hunger strike comprising a duration of 12 hours daily will end on February 22. Earlier, Altaf Hussain had made a controversial prediction that the next 15 days were very critical because of an uncertain political situation and chances of natural calamities due to climate change. Hence people should be very careful and store food and medicines to meet any untoward situation. The forecast was endorsed by MQM’s Rabita Committee that asked the nation to stock up food at their homes as the next 15 days were very crucial. This prediction created panic among citizens who are already passing through the trauma of lawlessness in Karachi. The statement was not appropriate but the response it received from the Rangers was equally unjustified. The Rangers’ criticism did nothing except further agonising citizens. There should be no issue with a peaceful hunger strike as it is the democratic right of citizens to stage protests for the acceptance of their just demands.

The ban on the coverage of Altaf Hussain in the media is debatable as it has both negative and positive aspects. Though curbs on the freedom of expression cannot be allowed in a civilised state but for a person like Altaf Hussain, who indulges in hate mongering, such a ban is a blessing in disguise. It is better for Mr Hussain that he should find some other means of communication with his followers. The MQM can consider the option of airing recorded and edited versions of the party chief’s speeches that would be more appropriate. One thing is clear that allowing live coverage of the hysterical outbursts of the MQM chief will not be a good decision unless someone provides a guarantee that he will keep control on his tongue and will not make defamatory and malicious harangues. Mr Hussain often indulges in making remarks that could be interpreted as inciting violence. The court restriction is beneficial for Altaf Hussain and the MQM too. It is saving Altaf from wasting his energies and further endangering his deteriorating health as well as the MQM from trying to defend and justify his bizarre utterances. Altaf Hussain needs to understand that there are limits to freedom of expression. Nobody can be allowed to use abusive language and transcend all civilised boundaries. It is high time the MQM leadership stopped providing excuses for the awkward remarks of Altaf Hussain. Being the chief of a mainstream political party, Altaf Hussain should think twice before making any controversial forecast. *
