ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif advised President Mamnoon Hussain on Wednesday to appoint Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Iqbal Zafar Jhagra as governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Jhagra, who is secretary general of the ruling party, is set to take over KP governor’s office after the government issues a notification in this regard. Earlier in February, KP Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan had decided to quit by the end of the month. On February 4, Khan met the prime minister in Islamabad to discuss his resignation. However, the prime minister asked him to continue to work till the appointment of the new KP governor. Khan said that he wanted to resign so that he could actively participate in politics. However, insiders say that Khan was facing hurdles in exercising his powers. Soon after assuming KP governor’s office in 2014, he started working on reforms in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), but these reforms could not be implemented. He formed a commission headed by former chief secretary Ejaz Qureshi to implement the FATA reforms, but the commission ceased to exist after some time without any explanation to the media or the parties involved.
