‘Speed thrills but kills’

Author: Staff Report

LAHORE: The National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) has started strict monitoring of speed cameras to detect traffic rules violations, including speeding, to reduce the number of road accidents on highways during the holy month of Ramazan.

According to reports, the volume of traffic increases during Iftar timings. Under such circumstances, there is an increased chance of road accident due to over speeding, tyre burst and dozing at wheel. In this connection, the highway police have devised a strategy to curb the tendency of road crashes on highways.

NHMP Deputy Inspector General (N-5 Central) has directed all beat commanders, deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) and admin officers to ensure their presence on highway one hour prior to Iftar timings, as most of the motorists are involved in reckless driving during the peak hour.

Officers have also been directed to ensure the use of hooters and horn whenever any HTV vehicle or a passenger bus passes by, especially in the dead of night.

According to a statement, special crime squads will be deployed in all sectors from Lahore to Rahim Yar Khan, and all beat commanders will ensure vigilant and effective patrolling in their areas.

All beat commanders have been asked to arrange ‘Sehri’ and ‘Iftari’ for officers on duty. Officers have been directed to extend prompt and meaningful help to road users in distress. Patrolling officers were also asked to observe maximum tolerance with commuters as they tend to lose temper near ‘Iftar timings.
