Lawyers in Punjab, Sindh hold strike against deputy speaker’s ruling

On Tuesday (today), Lawyers in Punjab and Sindh are holding a strike against the ‘unconstitutional’ cancellation of the no-confidence motion and the dissolution of the National Assembly (NA).

The Punjab Bar Council (PBC) has called for a complete strike across the province against the ‘unconstitutional’ acts of the government.

“Lawyers always believe in the Constitution and the rule of law,” reads the PBC declaration.

“The rejection of the no-confidence motion by the NA deputy speaker, accusing the opposition of being part of a foreign conspiracy, is unconstitutional,” it added.

“It is also unconstitutional for the President of Pakistan to dissolve the National Assembly on the proposal of the prime minister who is facing a no-confidence motion,” it stated.

“Lawyers condemn the move of rejecting the no-confidence resolution by the deputy speaker and dissolving the National Assembly by the president. Lawyers will not appear in courts today in protest,” reads the declaration.

On the other hand, the Sindh Bar Council (SBC) also filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the rejection of the no-confidence motion.

“The court should order re-voting on the no-confidence motion, declaring the NA deputy speaker’s ruling null and void,” reads the petition.

“The President’s order to dissolve the assemblies should be declared illegal. The NA deputy speaker was bound to allow voting on the no-confidence motion as it cannot be rejected without hearing members of the assembly. At the request of the prime minister, the deputy speaker and the president acted unconstitutionally,” it added.

The SBC had also called for a strike against the deputy speaker’s ruling on Tuesday (today). However, work in the court continued as lawyers and complainants appeared in the court as usual.
